Sonos Targets Comeback With New Play Portable and Era 100 SL Speakers
Sonos is pushing further into recovery mode with the launch of two new speakers – the portable Sonos Play and the stripped-back Era 100 SL – both set to hit the market on March 31.
The latest hardware marks a continued effort by the US audio brand to refocus on its core strength of multi-room audio, following a turbulent period marked by software missteps, retailer tension and increased competition.
The Sonos Play, which leaked earlier this month, is positioned as a versatile, portable speaker designed for both home and outdoor use.
It supports Wi-Fi for traditional Sonos multi-room setups but can also switch to Bluetooth for use on the go – an area where the company has historically lagged behind rivals.

Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, with an IP67 dust and water resistance rating, as well as the added ability to function as a power bank for mobile devices. A charging base and removable carry loop reinforce its portable credentials.
Sonos is also introducing expanded Bluetooth grouping, allowing users to sync up to four compatible speakers outside the home – an attempt to broaden appeal beyond its traditionally closed ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the Era 100 SL takes a more conservative approach. Essentially a simplified version of the existing Era 100 (pictured below), it removes the microphone and voice assistant functionality in favour of a cleaner, lower-cost entry point into the Sonos ecosystem.

Designed primarily for indoor use, the Era 100 SL can operate as a standalone speaker, stereo pair, or as part of a home theatre setup. Like the Play, it supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect.
Pricing is expected to land around $499 for the Play and $289 for the Era 100 SL in Australia.
Earlier this year Sonos reported a sharp profit rebound under new CEO Tom Conrad, despite continued revenue pressure in Asia Pacific.
