Microsoft has introduced its smallest Xbox controller yet, unveiling a compact gaming accessory designed for younger players, people with smaller hands and gamers looking for a more portable alternative to a full-sized controller.

Called the Xbox Nano Controller, the new device measures just over five inches long and weighs approximately 99 grams, making it considerably smaller and lighter than Microsoft’s conventional Xbox controllers.

Despite its miniature dimensions, Microsoft has managed to retain all 18 standard gameplay inputs, including the familiar button arrangement found on regular Xbox controllers. This means players can enjoy their favourite games without sacrificing essential controls.

The smaller design also makes the Xbox Nano particularly convenient for gaming on the move. Its lightweight construction allows it to fit easily into a pocket or bag, making it suitable for travelling, visiting friends or moving between gaming setups at home.

Microsoft has equipped the controller with a rechargeable battery, eliminating the need for disposable batteries. It also includes a programmable Action Button that can be customised to perform frequently used tasks, including capturing screenshots and recording gameplay footage.

Connectivity is another major feature, with support for both Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth. This allows the controller to work with compatible Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, iPhones, Android smartphones and selected smart TVs.

The broad compatibility makes the Nano a versatile option for players who regularly switch between devices, particularly those using cloud gaming services or playing games on their phones.

Microsoft is also positioning the controller as a convenient accessory for local multiplayer gaming. Its compact size could make it easier for families to keep additional controllers available for cooperative games such as Minecraft Dungeons II, which supports up to four players.

The Xbox Nano Controller is available for preorder in Australia, priced at A$79.95 through Microsoft’s official website or A$79 at JB Hi-Fi.

Microsoft says the new controller will begin shipping in November 2026.
