Global Mobile On The Move

Global mobile data traffic is set for a massive 47 percent increase over the next four years, rising from seven exabytes per month last year to something close to 49 exabytes in 2021.

Research firm Statista found that everyday mobile activities, including mobile chat and voice or video calls, and mobile e-commerce are driving the traffic.

But the largest growth area is in video traffic, which is projected to grow 55 percent annually through 2021. Mobile accounted for 60.3 percent of online video views, up from 54 percent of the corresponding quarter.

The dramatic increase has seen the arrival of disrupters such as Waltz Networks and RedTea mobile, which allow customers to control their Internet-connected devices as they travel, bypassing legacy telcos and avoiding roaming charges.
