Apple has confirmed it will be rolling out its iPad operating system update later than expected, with the release coming after its upcoming September 7 product reveal.

The company notes: “This is an especially big year for iPadOS. As its own platform with features specifically designed for iPad, we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on its own schedule. This Fall, iPadOS will ship after iOS, as version 16.1 in a free software update.”

Interestingly, the company will be skipping version 16.0, which is currently out in beta form and is assumed as the cause of the delay. Reportedly, the new Stage Manager feature is especially in beta form, forcing the pushing back of the release date.

The new iPad is also assumed to have been pushed back, in line with its software.

IPadOS 16 was first revealed in June at the company’s annual WWDC conference. Its new features will position the iPad as a serious work machine, closing the gap between a notebook and the tablet.

The new Stage Manager feature will bring multitasking to the iPad, allowing users to resize windows and slide between multiple tabs at once.
