Belkin’s Plug-&-Play Home Automation Kit

At present, three products make up WeMo’s range: the WeMo Switch which your devices plug into; the WeMo Switch + Motion, which adds a sensor with a 3 metre range; and the WeMo App, which is used on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches for remote control.

The WeMo switch fits between an ordinary power socket and your device, such as a television, computer or air conditioner. Once it’s connected to your home WiFi network, you’re able to turn the device on or off remotely from the WeMo application. As it is a modular system, you can add as many switches (and devices) to your WeMo network as you need.

“Until now, home automation technology has either been too complicated or too expensive for consumers. WeMo bridges that gap by using a plug-and-play solution for controlling appliances remotely,” said Brendan Sparks, Head of Marketing and Product Management ANZ.

Through the app, products can be set to a timed schedule. For example, if you arrive home from work at 6pm, the air conditioning can be set to start at 5:55pm.

The WeMo Switch + Motion sensor grants users more control by recognising motion within a range of 3 metres. Through WeMo’s app, users can define how a device responds to motion, such as turning off a light if no motion is sensed in a room for 10 minutes.

With IFTTT integration, WeMo products can perform additional services. These include email, phone calls, social networking actions (Facebook and Twitter) and weather updates. One example involves setting up a motion sensor by your front door and using IFTTT to create a rule which will SMS your phone any time motion is sensed.

“With these two simple devices and the free Wemo app, you can create a variety of tasks or recipes. The powerful combination of WeMo and IFTTT provides endless possibilities of what you can customise and control throughout your home,” said Sparks.
