Problem Industry-Wide, Says Budde – Urges Govt. Write-Off

SYDNEY – Telstra may not be the only one facing the wrath of the ACCC over the NBN speeds issue. “The problem is industry-wide,” independent analyst and commentator Paul Budde told CDN yesterday.

He added: “The ISPs have been experts in making it nearly impossible for users to find out what speeds they are actually buying. You might find that in the small lettering. So they are absolutely to blame for that and it is about time that they became more transparent on that issue.

“The underlying problem, however, is that the wholesale price from NBN Co is too high for the retailers to develop high-quality, high-speed broadband packages at an affordable price.

“The fundamental problem that needs to be solved is the high costs of the NBN and the high ROI the Government expects from NBN Co … [Eventually] the Government will have to face that and write off a very significant part of the NBN investment.”
