Samsung could be preparing a major shake-up of its foldable smartphone lineup in 2027, with a new leak suggesting the Galaxy Z Fold 9 could launch alongside either a larger Plus model or a more affordable Fan Edition (FE).

According to tipster Lanzuk, who shared the information on South Korean platform Naver, Samsung is considering two options for its next-generation foldable range but has yet to make a final decision.

The company is reportedly weighing up a Galaxy Z Fold 9 Plus with larger displays against a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 9 FE designed to bring foldable technology to a broader audience.

However, Samsung is not expected to release both devices, with only one potentially joining the standard Galaxy Z Fold 9 when the range launches next year.

The move would represent a significant change in Samsung’s foldable strategy as the company looks to attract customers with different budgets and screen-size preferences.

A Galaxy Z Fold 9 Plus would reportedly feature larger internal and external displays than the standard model, providing additional screen space for multitasking, gaming and watching videos.

However, the larger design could make the device less convenient for one-handed use.

Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a relatively compact 5.5-inch cover display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, giving it a passport-style design compared with the company’s larger foldables.

Alternatively, Samsung could introduce a Galaxy Z Fold 9 FE, offering a more affordable entry point into its book-style foldable range.

The FE model would likely retain the basic folding design while sacrificing some premium specifications to reduce manufacturing costs and retail pricing.

With the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starting at A$2,699, a cheaper model could help Samsung attract consumers who have been reluctant to pay flagship prices for a foldable smartphone.

The decision could also help Samsung strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive foldable market as rival manufacturers expand their offerings.

For now, Samsung has not confirmed either device, and there is no indication of how much a Plus or FE model might cost.

The Galaxy Z Fold 9 is expected to launch in the second half of 2027, giving Samsung several months to finalise its plans.

Regardless of which model makes the cut, the leak suggests Samsung is considering a broader foldable strategy rather than simply delivering another annual hardware upgrade.
