OzPost Plans Self-Serve Kiosks

MELBOURNE: Australia Post has revealed plans to set up “smart kiosks” in its shops, which will it hopes will allow customers to lodge packages themselves without needing – heaven forbid! –  staff assistance.

Dubbed SALI (for Smart Automated Lodgement API), the deal has been put together by Australia Post, working with Melbourne-based MeldCX, a certified Microsoft Azure partner.

It is said to use technology from Intel along with cloud services from Google and Microsoft.

“Concept SALi kiosks use powerful machine learning and computer vision technology to scan and detect each package – automatically verifying its size, weight, handwritten information, the sender’s identity and shipping cost,” according to MeldCX.

“This removes the guesswork, manual entry and complexity from shipping a package for customers and post office employees.”
