Has Barco Moved To Challenge Sony & Harman With Focal Naim Aquisition?
Belgian technology giant Barco, best known globally for its premium cinema and home-theatre projectors, has moved aggressively into the high-end audio market with the acquisition of VerVent Audio Group, the parent company of luxury audio brands Focal and Naim.
The deal signals a significant strategic shift for Barco as it seeks to build a fully integrated premium audio-visual ecosystem, combining its established expertise in projection and visualisation with high-end sound.
Barco said the acquisition is designed to strengthen its position across premium residential entertainment, consumer home cinema and professional AV markets, where demand for immersive audio-visual experiences is growing rapidly.
“Today marks an important step in Barco’s ambition to shape the future of immersive audio-visual experiences,” said An Steegen, CEO of Barco.
“By welcoming VerVent and its iconic Focal and Naim brands into the Barco family, we accelerate our strategy to deliver fully integrated solutions where image and sound reinforce each other seamlessly.”
Barco claim that they expects to realise synergies over the next years. Including this acquisition, Barco reconfirms its long-term EBITDA margin guidance of 15% by 2028.
After closing, VerVent will be integrated into Barco’s Entertainment division. Barco intends to support the company’s ongoing strategic plan, which focuses on high‑end premium audio positioning, a technology upgrade towards digital, active and connected products, portfolio rationalization and leveraging its sales network, including consumer channels and brand licensing.

A Strategic Power Play
Industry analysts see the move as a logical and potentially powerful strategic alignment.
Barco already commands strong global positions in visualisation, projection systems and cinema technologies. By adding Focal and Naim to its portfolio, the company now gains immediate credibility in the premium audio sector.
The VerVent Audio Group — which owns both brands — is estimated to generate around A$180 million in annual revenue, selling through specialist dealers and distributors worldwide.
In Australia, Focal and Naim products have historically moved between several distributors. They are currently handled by Melbourne-based distributor Westan.
Together, Focal and Naim bring a comprehensive audio offering to Barco’s ecosystem.
Focal delivers high-end loudspeakers, headphones and studio monitors, while Naim contributes electronics, amplifiers, streamers and multi-room systems — effectively covering the entire signal chain in a premium audio system.
Challenge to Sony and Harman
The acquisition could reshape the luxury home cinema market, where Barco’s projection technology is already well regarded.
Industry observers believe the move positions Barco to build a vertically integrated premium AV platform, potentially putting pressure on rivals such as Sony, which dominates high-end home cinema projection.
It may also strengthen Barco’s competitive position against Samsung-owned Harman Luxury Audio, which controls brands such as JBL Synthesis, Mark Levinson and Revel in the custom-installation and luxury audio space.
Innovation Opportunities
Analysts believe the merger creates strong opportunities for next-generation immersive entertainment systems, where audio and visual technologies are tightly integrated.
Barco says the acquisition will support its evolution toward fully integrated audiovisual solutions, spanning both consumer and professional markets.
Beyond the residential sector, the company believes the combined technology platform will create opportunities across public spaces, home cinema installations and professional cinema environments.
The Big Question: Independence
Despite the strategic fit, the biggest unknown remains how Barco will manage the brands.
Focal and Naim both enjoy strong reputations among audiophiles and have traditionally operated with a high degree of engineering independence.
Observers say preserving that identity will be critical.
The brands have already demonstrated a successful partnership since their 2011 merger, which combined Focal’s French loudspeaker expertise with Naim’s British electronics engineering.
Maintaining that balance while integrating with Barco’s technology platform will likely determine whether the acquisition strengthens the brands — or risks diluting their appeal.
For now, the industry is watching closely to see how far Barco pushes the integration of sound and vision across its expanding portfolio.
