In keeping with its tradition of naming its Android operating systems after delicious sweets, Google’s latest Android software is now called Oreo. The nicknames for earlier Android versions have included Nougat, Marshmallow, and Lollipop.
(For ignorant Aussies who may not know the term, in the US “Oreo” is described as “a commercial brand of confectionary consisting of two circular chocolate wafers or biscuits with a sweet crème filling” … a bit like a Wagon Wheel, perhaps)
Android’s Oreo boasts several new features, including the ability to respond to notifications directly on a phone’s home screen and the ability to access apps without installing them on a device.
The software is scheduled to be released in the current quarter, most likely after making its debut on a new Pixel phone that Google is expected to begin selling in October.
