Google Ditches AR Glasses
There are reports circulating that Google has ditched its plans for the release of another set of AR glasses, killing its planned return to the market.
What was referred to as Iris, had apparently been in the works for year, but have now allegedly pulled the plug, instead concentrating on building AR software platforms for third party manufacturers.
Basically, the company are looking at creating another Android or Wear OS for AR headsets, and is said to already be building an Android XR platform for a set of AR Samsung goggles, which have been reported as a response to Apple’s Vision Pro.

All that has been reported is the Google reached the decision to can Iris after many layoffs in January, along with the AR head Clay Bavor leaving.
Iris was described as a series of AR devices that looked like regular reading glasses, rather than the ski google look chosen by Apple.
Google started the AR headset market with the launch of the Google Glass in 2013, but pulled the prototype and retreated in 2015 after privacy concerns.

Google had acquired AR startup North in 2020, and the initial Iris headset resembled the Focals AR glasses.
