Google has officially begun rolling out Gemini on Android Auto, bringing a more conversational and intelligent AI into more than 250 million compatible cars. Anyone who has switched to the Gemini app on their Android phone will now see Gemini automatically take over for Google Assistant in the car.

Drivers can speak naturally, ask follow-up questions, and handle complex tasks without memorising rigid voice commands. Gemini can be triggered by saying “Hey Google,” tapping the microphone icon on the dashboard display, or long-pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel. All interactions remain hands-free to keep driving safe. The rollout is launching globally in 45 languages and will continue over the coming months.

The arrival of Gemini expands Android Auto far beyond the limitations of a traditional voice assistant and pushes it closer to a true digital co-pilot.

Maps gets smarter: Drivers can ask Gemini to find the best stops along a route, dig into business reviews, or answer practical questions such as whether a restaurant is dog-friendly or which dishes customers recommend.

Messaging becomes smoother: Gemini can edit messages without restarting them, add ETAs directly into texts, include emojis, and summarise multiple incoming messages in one view. It can also translate conversations into more than 40 languages as they happen.

Email and productivity come to the dashboard: Users can search Gmail, get summaries of unread messages, pull hotel or meeting addresses into navigation, and manage calendar events, reminders, and notes while keeping their focus on the road.

Music requests feel more intuitive: With support for YouTube Music and Spotify, Gemini can suggest playlists based on mood, weather, or occasion instead of requiring specific song or album titles.

For anyone who uses Android Auto daily, Gemini has the potential to turn idle drive time into useful, productive, or even creative moments without ever touching a phone. Navigation becomes smarter, messaging becomes cleaner, and managing email gets far easier. The new conversational mode also lets drivers say “Hey Google, let’s chat” to start a free-flowing discussion, brainstorm ideas, learn something new, or rehearse presentations while on the road.

Google says this is only the beginning. Gemini on Android Auto will continue to evolve with new capabilities and broader app support. At launch, it works with Gmail, Google Calendar, Tasks, Keep, and Samsung’s calendar, reminders, and notes. Support for additional third-party apps is planned, setting the stage for an even more capable in-car assistant as the rollout progresses.
