Global Notebook Sales Pick Up

Global notebook PC sales are expected to pick up in 2017, after the final quarter of 2016 showed an on-year increase for the first time since 2012, according to data from Taiwan-based Digitimes Research.

Q4 2016 shipments were boosted by strong demand from Europe and North America during the year-end holidays, Digitimes says. The release of new Apple MacBooks and strong shipments by US-based vendors also contributed to the strong performance.

Taiwan makers shipped more than 33 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016, Digitimes Research noted.

Shipments from Taiwan are expected to drop more than 10pc in the first quarter but the drop will not be as big as it was during the same quarter one year ago, and the outlook for the rest of the year is more promising, with the full year’s worldwide shipments reaching 146 million units.
