Coming Soon: Android 7.1

Google is preparing to launch Android 7.1, the next version of its operating system for mobile gadgets. A version for Google’s own gear is tipped to include support for better storage management and telephony software, app shortcut APIs to build single-click links directly into core directories, and UI changes to build better background graphics.

“Initially, we’ll offer the developer preview for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C devices, extending to other supported devices by the end of the preview,” said Dave Burke, VP of Android engineering.

“At the final release of the Android 7.1.x platform, due in early December, we’ll roll out updates to the full line-up of supported devices.”

Google said it is also working with partners on a rollout of 7.1 to other makers of Android-powered gear “over the months ahead.” Hang in there, Android fans…
