BOE Unveils The Future Of Premium Televisions
Chinese technology firm BOE may have unveiled the future of high-end television, after lifting the lid on their 55” 8K AMQLED television during Display Week at the Society for Information Display’s.
The new AMQLED (Active-Matrix Quantum Dots Light Emitting Diode) technology benefits from the perks of OLED televisions in not needing a backlight, whilst also making use of quantum dot technology. Typical QLED panels are comprised of an LED backlight, a quantum dot film, and an LCD screen.
The new television instead makes use of quantum dot nanocrystals that light up when in the presence of an electric field.
The main benefit of the new technology is a long-lasting television that still boasts high contrast, and wide colour gamut.
Manufacturing costs, according to BOE, are considerably low in comparison to rival microLED technology, as all panels can be inkjet printed other than the cathode.
BOE have exhibited this technology before with lower resolutions and smaller displays (5-inch and 14-inch initially). The new model however, whilst still a prototype, proves the potential of the technology.
