Atlassian Offers Group Video Chat

Atlassian has thrown out a challenge to expensive video conferencing systems by adding “group video chat” to its HipChat platform. The system reportedly enables teams to start group chats with the click of a button without any extensions or downloads required.

“You shouldn’t have to be in a room with special equipment,” Hipchat GM Steve Goldsmith told Australian IT. “We’re finding more and more that the workforce is becoming more mobile, more freelance, and more distributed.”

Goldsmith said PBX and VoIP-based video conference systems were going the way of taxis and home phones, and “no-one needs them anymore”.

The Atlassian system is “the virtual version of spinning your chair around to brainstorm an idea – but with colleagues who work across the room or across the globe,” he said.
