Unbelievably Professor Michelle Simmons and a team of colleagues from the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology have managed to modify a scanning probe microscope so they can lay down a string of phosphorus atoms, and then have encased them in silicone. The result is the world’s smallest wire.

Recently, some experts were predicting that semi-conductor technology was reaching its zenith, however this new discovery – although still in its infancy – could possibly open the door for new electronic components and the applications they can perform.

Intel, AMD and IBM have already shown interest in the new development, a sure sign they are heading in the right direction.
