REVIEW: MSI GL75 – A Mid-Range Gamer Delivering Where It Counts

The mid-range gaming laptop market has been getting extremely competitive in recent times, especially considering the quality machines you can now get for the price point, and the latest in this range to hit the Australian market is MSI’s GL75 – a great mid-range gamer that delivers where it counts.

Priced at $1,899, the MSI GL75 features premium features for cheap – a 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-9750H six-core processor, 16GB of DDR4 memory, a 512GB NVMe SSD, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card. Also, thanks to its dedicated graphics card and fast 144Hz refresh rate (which reduces screen stuttering and motion blur), gamers’ will be able to experience a much more fluid, high-quality experience.

All of this comes together to deliver an awesome laptop for anyone looking for a quality performance gaming system, without the hefty price tag that tends to be attached to these types of machines.

On the graphics front, I found the display to be great and delivered good colours and brightness, while keeping sharpness and contrasts at a high level. Gameplay remained crisp, even at higher framerates, especially on some of the older games like StarCraft or Counter Strike. It also had no issues dealing with massive Battle Royale-type games like Apex Legends and Fortnite too.

I tested the GL75’s capabilities on several AAA games too (Batman Arkham Knight, Battlefield and The Witcher) and it performed above average with decent framerates  (compared to other similarly-specced mid-rangers), but I would suggest lowering the settings to be able to better deal with the higher resolutions.

It was able to handle hours of hardcore gaming without loss of quality, but the high graphical performance of the laptop does generate quite a lot of heat, causing the internal fans to obviously work a lot harder to keep everything cool. And this is where my biggest gripe comes in, as the heat management causes the fans to get extremely loud. A solution to this is the ‘turbo’ mode, which makes the fans run at peak levels, helping to better manage the heat a lot better.

Sound quality was quite impressive for a mid-ranger, with the sound remaining clear and balanced throughout, even at the highest volumes. The overall bass levels aren’t the best though, which didn’t really bother me, but those looking for this feature might be a bit disappointed.

Battery doesn’t last too long either when unplugged. I got between 1.5-2 hours (give or take) of heavy gaming before it ran dry, so I suggest either keeping it plugged in when possible, or having the charger on-hand when using the laptop on-the-go. On that final note, it’s quite good for portability – weighing in at only 2.5kg, despite looking quite chunky and large – which is a definite plus.

Other integrated features include HDMI and Mini DisplayPort connectivity, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, a backlit keyboard, webcam, microphones, audio jacks and multiple USB ports.

CONCLUSION

The overall performance of the GL75 is great, making it a great mid-range Full HD gaming laptop that delivers where it counts. Despite several issues relating to heat management and fan noise, the powerful hardware under the hood, excellent speakers and high refresh rate combines to deliver a great gaming experience at an affordable price.
