One of the big differences between high-end VR players Oculus Rift and HTC has been the latter’s support for roomscale VR.
However, the tech gap between the two products has now gotten smaller with Oculus’ latest software update adding support for up to four tracking sensors.
This functionality very much represents the second major tier of virtual reality, allowing users to not just experience static digital spaces but move within them.
While it’s good news for current Oculus Rift owners, the impacts of the update itself are limited by the availability of the hardware.
Currently, the Rift ships with a single tracking sensor and they aren’t available separately – at least for now.
Additional sensors, along with the Oculus Touch controller, are expected to become available sometime this year.
