$25 A Month BigCommerce Web Site Operator Scores $40M

Retailers using the BigCommerce, e-commerce SaaS platform can build and manage an e-commerce Web site starting from $25 a month.

The capital injection is the biggest such investment yet made by Washington-based Revolution Growth, which is headed by former AOL chairman Steve Case, and follows the raising of US$35 million in funding from other venture capital sources.

BigCommerce created and markets a software-as-a service system that helps small businesses and start-ups to set up online stores.

The company was founded in 2009 by Eddie Machaalani and Mitchell Harper. Headquartered in Sydney it now employs about 350 people, most of the in the US. Mitch Harper told media the company plans to double headcount in the next year.

BigCommerce claims to have around 40,000 customers and is looking to sign another 15-30,000 new customers over the next 12 months.

Part of the latest funding will apparently be used to attack the European market, starting with an office in the UK.

BigCommerce claims that until recently retailers looking to go online faced a complex process costing as much as $10,000 and taking up to six months.
