Nintendo Switch 2 Demand Surges Amid Ongoing Stock Shortages
Consumer electronics retailers in Australia with early access to the Nintendo Switch 2 are experiencing a surge in demand, with stock availability continuing to be a significant challenge.
Major retailers such as EB Games The Good Guys and JB Hi-Fi have reported heightened in-store and online traffic, as eager consumers search for stock and compare prices.
The phenomenon isn’t limited to Australia—Nintendo Switch 2 is shattering global sales records and has officially become the fastest-selling console ever, according to market analysts.
Retailers speaking with ChannelNews suggest this spike in demand may continue for months. The Switch 2 officially launched in Australia on June 5.
Within just four days, Nintendo reported sales exceeding 3.5 million units worldwide, setting a new industry benchmark. For context, Sony took 16 days to sell 2.1 million PlayStation 4 units, and seven weeks to move 4.4 million PS5s, according to Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners.
Analysts point to the original Nintendo Switch’s popularity—152 million units sold—as an indicator that the similarly designed Switch 2 could also enjoy long-term success. Retailers have so far maintained the recommended retail price due to sustained demand.
Accessory sales and interest in new game titles for the Switch 2 are also contributing to strong retail performance, despite a relatively limited initial game lineup.
Technically, the Switch 2 offers a notable upgrade—it’s powerful enough to handle a range of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series games, with several titles already being adapted for the new handheld device from Nintendo.
With its hybrid functionality—usable both as a handheld system and docked to a TV via HDMI—the Switch 2 is competing across the console, handheld, and mobile gaming spaces.
Its runaway success is a stark contrast to the Wii U, Nintendo’s previous console, which failed to gain traction after its 2012 launch.
