Microsoft’s Project Helix Faces Uncertainty Over Steam Support
Microsoft’s rumoured next-generation gaming device, Project Helix, is shaping up as a potential console–PC hybrid, but questions remain over whether it will support major third-party platforms like Steam.
Speaking to Game File, Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma stopped short of confirming compatibility with external storefronts, including Valve’s Steam and the Epic Games Store.
While Sharma reiterated Microsoft’s ambition to build a more “open” ecosystem, she declined to clarify what that would mean in practice for Helix.
Instead, Sharma pointed to broader goals around enabling more creators on the platform and giving players greater control over how they customise their experience. The lack of a direct answer has raised concerns among gamers and industry observers who had expected Helix to function more like a Windows-based gaming PC.

Early speculation positioned the device alongside handheld PCs such as ASUS’s ROG Ally, which allow access to multiple storefronts. But, without Steam support, Helix could resemble a more traditional console model, albeit with added flexibility.
There also appears to be mixed messaging from Microsoft and its partners. Epic Games Store boss Steve Allison previously suggested his platform could arrive on future Xbox hardware, but Sharma later indicated she was not involved in those discussions and that decisions are still under review.

The outcome could significantly impact both pricing and consumer appeal. A closed ecosystem would allow Microsoft to steer users toward its own store, potentially subsidising hardware costs – a strategy long used by Sony and Nintendo.
However, limiting access to established PC libraries may deter players expecting a more open platform.
With Microsoft also reportedly reassessing its broader gaming strategy, including exclusivity and platform identity, Project Helix remains firmly in flux. Its success may hinge on how open it ultimately becomes.
