COMPUTEX: Lenovo Unveil World First 5G PC

Lenovo and Qualcomm have revealed the efforts of their collaboration, Project Limitless: an ultra-portable always-connected laptop prototype with Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 8cx modem capable of connecting to the 5G network.

The prototype device is the first-ever laptop with 5G connectivity and is being demoed this week Computex Taipei.

Not too many details were shared on this device besides its Snapdragon 8cx chipset and 5G connectivity support.

It also claims to also support multi-gigabit LTE on 4G networks, and thanks to its 7nm architecture it promises days of power instead of hours.

The octa-core Kyro 495 Snapdragon 8cx offers an expanded 10MB cache and boasts “extreme” performance, connectivity, and battery life for devices as well as “immersive user experience”.

However, as 5G infrastructure is not fully completed, the prototype laptop’s claims cannot be tested so its real-world capabilities cannot but fully known at this time, but indicates a promising future for mobile consumers.

“With real 5G in a PC, it’s all about satisfying users’ need for speed: faster file transfers and streaming in 4K, 8K and even AR/VR; faster and higher quality video chats on-the-go; even faster screen refreshes for mobile gaming,” says Johnson Jia, Senior VP and GM, Consumer Business of Intelligent Devices Group, Lenovo.

“When we say limitless connectivity, we mean it – 5G PC users the world-over will save time, stay productive, or get online entertainment from nearly anywhere, at any time.”

Lenovo and Qualcomm say more information on Project Limitless is coming in early 2020.
