Apple is rumoured to be working on a rival to Google’s flopped augmented reality (AR) Glasses, following newly leaked code within the internal build of iOS 13.
According to MacRumours, internal builds of iOS 13 (not yet released to the public) contain an app named “STARTester”, which allows users to swap an iPhone in and out of head-mounted mode.
The app reportedly boasts two different states – one for being held, the other when being worn.
The rumoured leaks resurrect talk that Apple is pursuing augmented reality glasses, with consensus opinion expecting the device will connect with an iPhone via Bluetooth.
Apple Chief, Tim Cook, has frequently pointed towards AR as the basis of future tech, with its impact set to be “profound” on daily life.
The news follows early speculation Apple had ceased its AR glasses project in mid-2019, following the departure of its head designer.
Other details continued within the internal build reportedly include “StarBoard mode” with “AR” elements – e.g. “ARStarBoardViewController” and “ARStarBoardSceneManager.”
An internal README file reportedly labels the StarBoard system as the basis for stereo AR-enabled apps, whilst teasing a device codenamed “Garta.”
