Kaleidescape has launched its highest-capacity movie server to date, the Terra Prime 120TB, as the company marks 25 years in high-end home cinema systems.

The new server can store up to 2,000 4K films locally, positioning it as a direct alternative to streaming platforms rather than a complement to them.

Priced at US$34,995 (around A$53,000), the Terra Prime 120TB replaces the previous 96TB model and is designed for large-scale, multi-room home theatre deployments.

Kaleidescape claims users can download a full-quality 4K movie in as little as eight minutes over a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet connection.

Unlike Netflix or Apple TV, the platform focuses on full-bitrate downloads with lossless audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Content is stored locally, eliminating buffering and compression issues commonly associated with streaming.

The system integrates with Kaleidescape’s Strato movie players and can deliver up to 10 simultaneous 4K streams across a home. Multiple servers can also be combined for even larger installations.

Physically, the unit is a rack-mountable 2RU chassis with four removable hard drives, active cooling, and enterprise-style performance – clearly designed for dedicated equipment racks rather than living room setups.

While Kaleidescape offers smaller and more affordable options, including 22TB and 48TB models, the 120TB version represents the top end of its lineup and is targeted at serious collectors and luxury home builds.
