HTC Blockchain Powered Phone Launching This Year

Following earlier reports, struggling smartphone manufacturer, HTC, has revealed its revolutionary blockchain powered smartphone will launch later this year.

Claimed to be the world’s second blockchain powered smartphone, the codenamed ‘Exodus’ device features a universal wallet, with hardware support for cryptocurrencies and decentralised apps.

Lead by HTC Vive Founder, Phil Chen, Exodus is tipped to support ethereum and bitcoin with more network partnerships added over time.

According to The VergeChen asserts the device will be priced similarly to the world’s first blockchain powered smartphone – Sirin Labs’ Finney – at around US$1000 .

Official pricing will reportedly be provided in Q3 this year, with global availability (excluding China) expected.

Chen affirms a smartphone with a cryptocurrentcy wallet will provide the most secure wallet on the market, however, adds the device will initially target a “niche” audience.

Commentators claims it’s an interesting strategy for the struggling smartphone manufacturer.

Latest IDC numbers reveal HTC shipped around 630,000 units in Q1 this year, versus around 2 million the year before.

Revenues have also slumped 46% year-on-year, coupled with the company’s decision to slash almost a quarter of its global workforce.
