Google Maps is rolling out an Android Auto update that will display a vehicle’s live speed, the posted speed limit and selected road alerts even when drivers have not entered a destination.

Previously, the information generally appeared only after navigation had started, limiting its usefulness during short or familiar journeys where motorists did not need turn-by-turn directions.

Google has confirmed the new persistent display is being introduced gradually, meaning it will not immediately appear for every Android Auto user.

Once enabled, Google Maps can continue showing the live speedometer and current road speed limit while the map is open without an active route. Traffic signals and stop signs may also remain visible in supported locations.

The change brings Google Maps closer to Waze, which has long displayed speed information without requiring users to begin navigation.

Google Maps introduced road speed limits in 2019, but its live speedometer only began reaching Android Auto users more broadly during 2026. The feature has already been available through Google Maps on Apple CarPlay.

The rollout has caused some confusion after Android Auto users reported that the speedometer and related information had disappeared from their displays.

Google said it is investigating a separate bug that may have removed the speedometer for some users. Others may still need to set a destination because the always-on functionality has not reached their account or device.

Android Auto experiences may therefore vary according to app version, device and whether Google has enabled the server-side update.

Google has not provided a timetable for when the always-on speedometer and road alerts will reach every Android Auto user in Australia.

The change follows Google’s July rollout of Immersive Navigation for Android Auto, which introduced detailed 3D buildings, bridges, landmarks, road signage and more conversational voice guidance to compatible in-car displays.
