Google has begun rolling out a major upgrade to Google Maps on Android Auto, introducing its Immersive Navigation experience to compatible in-car infotainment systems.

The update replaces the traditional 2D navigation view with a more detailed 3D interface that renders bridges, buildings, landmarks and other road features to provide drivers with greater visual context.

The feature, which is already starting to appear for users, offers intuitive navigation and is designed to reduce driver distraction by making it easier for users to understand road layouts, lane positioning and upcoming turns.

Alongside vivid 3D visuals, the upgrade also means realistic building heights, landmarks, real-time addition of signage and more natural sounding directions with conversational voice guidance.

While Google Maps’ Immersive Navigation has previously been available on Android smartphones, this marks its first foray into Android Auto. The upgrade promises to bring a more premium Google Maps experience to in-car infotainment.

The rollout is expected to be server-side and not tied to a specific version release. Users may receive the upgrade automatically without a manual update via Android Auto.

The enhancement strengthens Google’s in-car software offering as it continues to compete with Apple CarPlay, with both platforms expanding navigation and infotainment capabilities through software updates.

For vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket infotainment suppliers supporting Android Auto, the upgrade delivers enhanced functionality without requiring new hardware, reinforcing Google’s software-led approach to improving the in-car experience.
