Google Makes Moving From iPhone To Android Easier With Android 17 Update
Google is introducing a significantly improved device migration experience with Android 17, making it far simpler for iPhone owners to move their data to an Android handset. The changes arrive through an upgraded version of Android Switch, a tool designed to streamline the transition between mobile platforms.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the removal of several setup hurdles that previously complicated the transfer process. Android Switch is now built directly into the operating systems, eliminating the need for users to install an additional application before beginning the migration.
The update also removes reliance on a physical cable connection. Users can now transfer their information wirelessly, creating a more seamless setup experience and reducing the number of steps required when moving to a new device.

Google has also expanded the range of information that can be carried across from an iPhone. In addition to contacts, photos and messages, Android Switch can now transfer passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi settings, call logs, files, folders, alarms and calendar attachments. Support has also been added for Apple Notes content, including attached files and organisational labels.
Messaging migration has received attention as well. SMS, MMS and encrypted RCS conversations can now be moved to Android devices, helping users retain a more complete communication history when changing platforms.
Beyond personal data, the updated tool is designed to recreate much of the user’s existing device experience. Wallpapers, home screen arrangements, application positioning and accessibility preferences can all be copied during setup, allowing the new Android phone to feel more familiar from the outset.
Google is also laying the groundwork for broader support from third-party developers. New programming tools have been introduced that could allow apps to transfer user data directly between ecosystems rather than relying entirely on operating system-level migration features.
Account setup has been simplified too. Users can now bring their Google account across automatically, avoiding the need to manually enter passwords during onboarding. The process can also transfer an eSIM from an iPhone and configure RCS messaging in the background, helping ensure messaging services are ready to use immediately after setup is completed.
The enhanced migration system is currently becoming available on Android 17 devices, beginning with supported Pixel smartphones. Availability is expected to expand gradually as the update reaches more users.
For years, changing from an iPhone to an Android device has often involved a lengthy and sometimes frustrating setup process. Google’s latest improvements are intended to remove much of that complexity, transforming what was once a manual task into a more automated and user-friendly experience.
