Apple has chosen former Google executive John Giannandrea to lead a new artificial intelligence and machine-learning team.
Giannandrea will report to Apple CEO Tim Cook as the company works to catch up to rivals such as Google in AI and machine learning. He joined Apple in April, following an eight-year stint at Google, where he served as head of machine intelligence, research and search teams.
The hiring has been perceived as a step in the right direction for Apple, which some observers view as lagging behind in artificial intelligence.
Apple has said Giannandrea will run the company’s machine learning and AI strategy.
