Australian consumers are being urged to immediately stop using certain Mistral barrel vacuum cleaners sold through Bunnings after a nationwide product recall was issued due to a potential fire hazard.

The recall affects Mistral Barrel Cyclonic Vacuum Cleaner models BVC160 and BVC165, which were available for purchase across Australia between 28 July 2025 and 26 May 2026.

According to the recall notice, a manufacturing defect may cause the vacuum cleaner’s motor to overheat during operation. If this occurs, there is a risk the motor could catch fire, creating the potential for serious burns and property damage.

Several incidents linked to the affected products have already been reported. Consumers have experienced unusual operating noises, unpleasant odours and smoke being emitted from the vacuum cleaners while in use.

The recalled products include the 1800W Mistral Barrel Cyclonic Vacuum Cleaner, model BVC160, and the 2400W version, model BVC165. The units can be identified by electrical approval numbers GMA-522813-EA or GMA-526271-EA, as well as the model numbers printed on the appliance rating label.

GSM Retail Australia Pty Ltd, which is managing the recall, has advised customers to immediately disconnect affected vacuum cleaners from the power supply and cease using them.

Consumers can return the recalled products to any Bunnings store nationwide to receive a full refund.

The vacuum cleaners were manufactured in China and sold through Bunnings outlets across Australia.
