Melbourne-based distributor Interdyn has been appointed by Panasonic Australia to handle the distribution of Technics Hi-Fi products, following a strategic review of the brand’s positioning in the local market.

Interdyn, which is well known for its extensive AV and professional AV portfolio, will now oversee the Technics Hi-Fi range in Australia. This includes turntables, audio components and speakers, with retailers stocking the brand expected to invest in dedicated in-store merchandising.

Technics headphones will also be distributed by Interdyn under a non-exclusive arrangement. Distribution of Technics DJ products remains unchanged and will continue to be supplied by Store DJ.

Technics holds legendary status in the audio industry and is widely regarded as a “gold standard” brand for turntables. While the brand experienced a temporary hiatus in the early 2010s, it has since re-established itself as a premium high-fidelity and lifestyle audio brand.

As of 2026, Technics is enjoying a strong resurgence, driven by the global revival of vinyl and renewed consumer interest in established, high-end home audio brands. The iconic SL-1200 series remains the definitive industry standard for DJs, with the current SL-1200MK7 still considered the go-to deck for professionals thanks to its durability and motor precision.

Since its relaunch in 2014, Technics has expanded well beyond turntables in Australia. The Panasonic-owned brand now offers a broader range of premium audio products, including speakers and true wireless earbuds. Models such as the EAH-AZ80 have received “Best Earbuds” awards for their noise cancellation and sound quality.

Unlike its 1980s era, when the brand produced more entry-level equipment, modern Technics is firmly positioned at the premium end of the market, with Interdyn tasked with further revitalising the brand locally.

Scott Mellish, Panasonic General Manager – Imaging Solutions & Specialist Group, said the decision followed a comprehensive review of the Australian Hi-Fi landscape and reflects Panasonic’s long-term ambitions for Technics in Australia.

“This exclusive arrangement confidently positions Technics for its next chapter of growth,” Mellish said. “Interdyn’s established presence in the premium audio segment, along with its specialist dealer network, will help us deliver an even stronger level of product expertise and service for Technics Hi-Fi in Australia.

“At the heart of this decision are our customers and retail partners. We believe they will benefit from a distributor with deep specialisation in high-fidelity audio, knowledgeable staff, hands-on support, and a distribution model designed specifically for this category.”

The exclusive agreement will deliver a number of added benefits for Technics customers and retailers, including a cartridge matching service for Technics turntables using Ortofon premium phono cartridges, fitted and aligned prior to shipping; a dropship service for streamlined fulfilment; access to Interdyn’s expert staff and training support; and dealernet portal access for simplified ordering and management.

Interdyn director Sam Encel said the company was excited to add Technics Hi-Fi to its portfolio.

“Interdyn has represented quality audiovisual brands for more than 60 years, working with hundreds of retailers and custom installers across Australia,” Encel said. “We are excited to welcome Technics Hi-Fi to the family and continue our mission of bringing leading home audio products to more Australians.”
