Telstra Super $100M NRL Deal Today?

Telstra execs and ARL Commission Chairman, Mr John Grant and Interim CEO, Mr Shane Mattiske, are to make a “special announcement regarding the game’s future” to the media at the Telstra building at George Street, Sydney, at 12.30pm today.

The “special announcement” is relating to the 2013 season and beyond and is believed to be a content deal worth as much as $100 million and could bag the telco the mobile, tablets and IPTV broadcast rights to NRL matches, carrying on from its previous contract with the rugby code.

Telstra is also believed to get “some” other digital rights for the games shown by Nine Network reports AFR.

This rumoured deal comes after the recent legal scrap Telstra, NRL and AFL had with Optus, which led to Telstra’s arch rival being forced to ditch its TVNow mobile app due to copyright issues.

There was fears the mobile app, which recorded and played back free-to-air shows within minuets of live broadcasts, would render Telstra’s million dollar deals with the NRL and AFL virtually worthless.
