Yahoo Gets Into Bed With Google For “Historic” News Deal

A new payment deal between Yahoo Australia and Google’s News Showcase will result in “more local, top quality journalism.”

Yahoo Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia senior director of content Simon Wheeler adds the company is looking to “reinvest into producing more local, top quality journalism, and take our strategy to the next level.”

Launched last February, Google News Showcase allows the brand to pay news publishers such as News Corp and Guardian Australia a set monthly fee. It is available through their news app, and there are plans for it to rollout in search.

The service – which already involves deals with more than 100 titles around Australia and almost 1000 international outlets – came about after the news media bargaining code was passed in parliament this year.
