Apple is planning its first major update to the struggling Vision Pro headset, with a refresh expected later this year.

The move comes as the $5,999 (A$9,000) device struggles to gain traction in the market due to limited app support, a high price and hardware discomfort.

According to Bloomberg, the updated model will feature a faster M4 processor, which is already used in the latest iPads and Macs, to replace the older M2 chip.

The new version is also tipped to include enhanced AI processing power and a redesigned head strap aimed at reducing neck strain, a common complaint among early adopters.

While not a complete redesign, the update is a stopgap measure as Apple works toward a lighter, more affordable Vision Pro model slated for 2027.

Code-named “N100,” that future version is expected to significantly reduce the headset’s weight and bulk, which are two of the key drawbacks of the current generation.

The Vision Pro, launched in early 2024, was pitched as a groundbreaking mixed-reality headset blending AR and VR. But Apple has only sold hundreds of thousands of units so far, which is a far cry from its usual hardware rollouts.

Even die-hard Apple users have returned the device, citing fatigue and limited software utility.

Apple’s long-term ambitions include tethered enterprise-focused headsets and true AR glasses, with plans to enter the smart glasses space by 2026.

However, rivals like Meta and Samsung are moving quickly, with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses already finding success and Samsung preparing to launch a lighter mixed-reality headset later this year.
