Apple Leak Reveals 48MP Sensor And USB-C For IPhone 15
Among several whispers already circulating about the reported September release of Apple’s iPhone 15 is a welcome camera upgrade.
With other leaks around the 15 Pro and Pro Max – which may be rebranded as Ultra –including a titanium chassis with solid state haptic volume buttons, a 3nm A17 chip, Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem, USB-C port and a boost from 6GB to 8GB of RAM, word has it the 15 Plus will upgrade to a 48MP main camera like the iPhone 14 models.
It’s believed this will be a three-staked sensor like other Pros before it, which is something of a shock considering the extra cost involved compared to the 12MP sensors Apple had been using.
A move to USB-C is also expected across the board, not just to the Pro as initially expected, though it seems we shouldn’t prepare for a telephoto lens, and get used to the A16 chipset from the iPhone 14.
As for design, all iPhone 15 models will likely feature the pill-cut-out, and the dynamic island that benefits from a high refresh rate display.
Word has it Samsung Display’s plant in Vietnam will be a key production partner for the design and have already ordered equipment from Phil Optics to get the ball rolling.
Apple are also believed to be working on a display upgrade called Under Panel Face ID that will let them hide the Face ID cut-out under the display, reducing th size of the current pill-shaped cut-out by 50 per cent and leaving more room for the Dynamic Island.
Apple first filed for a patent for the Under Panel Camera in 2019. Other Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 already roll out with under-display front cameras.
As far as price goes, it’s probably best not to expect a drop. Then again, it’s Apple, so that goes without saying, really.
