Amazon Set To Unveil Touchscreen Echo

Amazon will reportedly expand its Echo smart speaker range as early as tomorrow with a new device that features a 7-inch touchscreen for video calling and added interactivity.

After the announcement of the Echo Look last month, which added a camera to Amazon’s typical smart speaker, the new touchscreen-equipped device will be able to respond to verbal questions on screen rather than just by voice, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The report, which also suggests the device will retail at more than US$200 compared to the existing Echo at US$180 and the Echo Look at US$200, notes that Amazon is aiming to make it “core to a home’s communications”.

Calling capabilities could initially be limited to an intercom-like feature between all Echo devices in one household, or between Echo owners in different locations.

Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the device could be announced on Tuesday in the US, with the addition of calling capabilities to all Echo devices expected in the following weeks.
