Airtasker Swaps 20% Stake For Free TV Advertising

Airtasker has struck an interesting deal which will see UK television station Channel 4 receive 20 per cent of its UK arm in exchange for $6.5 million in free advertising on the channel.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the tech company has traded equity for exposure. The Sydney-based company saw huge growth when it did a similar contra deal with Seven West Media in 2016, that saw the network take a slice of the then-nascent company in exchange for national advertising.

Annualised revenue increased 20 times between striking the deal in 2016, and 2021.

CEO Tim Fung (pictured below) has since said, “It was one of the best partnerships and moves that we made in the history of Airtasker”, noting they “immediately saw 35 per cent week on week growth.”

“It was a step change in moving brand awareness from roughly two per cent to something like 25 per cent in the space of six to 12 months, so that was absolutely massive,” he told Mi3.

Now Fung is hoping to repeat this success in the UK.

“It was a really good way of increasing brand awareness and revenue,” Fung said.

“So we’re going to try and do the same thing we did last time, where we can use this money to get access to their audiences.

“TV is a super effective media platform for us, and the Seven West deal worked in Australia.”
