NBN Plans GFast Links
The technology involved is currently delivering services at 50 megabits per second, but has the potential to deliver 500Mbps or “even a gigabit-per-second speed on very short copper distances”, Morrow told the 2015 Astra Conference.
Morrow predicted that eventually more than half of Australian homes will have access to speeds of up to one gigabit per second.
He noted that NBN is planning to deploy its fibre-to-the premises system to some 20 per cent of premises covered by the network, while hybrid fibre-coax (HFC) cable TV links acquired from Telstra and Optus will be used to connect 34 per cent of premises.
Morrow also said NBN will launch services using its controversial fibre-to-the-node technology from September 21, and predicted some users could see speeds reaching 100 megabits per second.
