Telcos Protest Over Journo Win On Metadata Access

Fairfax IT journo Ben Grubb, won the right to access data from his mobile phone service, after Privacy Commissioner Tim Pilgrim ruled that Telstra had breached the Privacy Act “by failing to provide Grubb with access to his personal information”.

The ruling related to an almost two-year struggle by the Fairfax technology editor. He had sought access to some of the types of metadata held by telcos that are accessed by law enforcement agencies during investigations.

Pilgrim ruled last week that within 30 business days of his decision the telco must “provide the complainant with access to his personal information held by Telstra.
