Zuckerberg Threatens To Shut Down Facebook And Instagram

Meta’s latest earnings report was enough to cause the world’s largest single-day stock crash in the history of Wall Street, so you’d been forgiven for missing the other potentially world-shaking bit of information contained within.

Meta has concluded that, since European privacy laws prevent the company from storing European data on US servers, it may have to shut down Facebook and Instagram across the whole of Europe.

“If we are unable to transfer data between and among the countries and regions in which we operate, or if we are restricted from sharing data among our products and services, it could affect our ability to provide our services, the manner in which we provide our services or our ability to target ads,” the statement reads.

Given this is how the company makes money, it doesn’t seem like an idle threat.
