Hello AI: Google Buy DeepMind

One of the
world’s biggest tech companies has purchased¬†
London-based
artificial intelligence company, DeepMind, for a rumoured US$400m,
reports Re/Code.

The
Mountain View giant was said to be the favoured buyer over Facebook, who had
been in talks with DeepMind about acquiring the company, last year.

The AI
company uses techniques from machine learning and systems neuroscience to
build powerful general-purpose learning algorithms, and to basically finding
ways to make computing more human like and intuitive. Deepmind’s commercial
applications include simulations, e-commerce and games.

All major
tech companies are looking to move deeper into AI, seen as the next big thing
in computing.

Deepmind
was founded by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, and supported
by some of the technology entrepreneurs, according to its website.

Google are
also said to be developing an ethics board for Deepmind to ensure the
technologies are not abused, reports suggest.
