Samsung is preparing to enter the AI smart glasses market later this year with its first Android XR-powered wearable expected to compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.

While yet to announce an official launch date, Samsung has confirmed the device will be released during the southern hemisphere spring, with further details expected at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event.

Developed in partnership with Google, the glasses will run Android XR and integrate Google’s Gemini AI assistant, allowing users to interact via voice commands without the need to access a smartphone. Samsung will offer multiple frame designs and is collaborating with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

The wearable is expected to feature built-in microphones, speakers and front-facing cameras to enable users to receive turn-by-turn navigation, make calls, send messages, translate conversations and signs in real time, and ask Gemini about surrounding objects.

The glasses will integrate with compatible Android and iPhone devices.

Industry reports suggest the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 processor, weigh about 50 grams and include a 155mAh battery. Pricing has not been announced, although analysts expect Samsung to target the premium smart glasses segment currently occupied by Meta’s Ray-Ban range.

Samsung’s move signals an acceleration of competition in the AI wearables market, where Meta has established itself as an early leader with its Ray-Ban smart glasses. Rather than focusing on augmented reality displays, Samsung’s first-generation product is expected to prioritise AI-powered assistance, photography and hands-free communication.

For the consumer electronics industry, the launch depicts another step towards AI becoming embedded in everyday devices, extending beyond smartphones into new categories like wearables. The new offering also strengthens Samsung’s strategic partnership with Google as both companies look to expand the Android XR ecosystem and challenge Meta’s growing influence.
