Volvo Wants Its Driverless Car On The Road Next Year

Volvo used CES 2022 to announce its new driverless system ‘Ride Pilot’, which will pilot passengers along certain roads without the use of a human driver.

Rather than being a mere concept, the company is planning to have this technology on Californian roads next year.

“We will not require hands on the steering wheel and we will not require eyes on the road,” Henrik Green, Volvo’s CTO told The Verge.

“We’re still being very purposely non-distinct in the wake-up time that we require,” he continued.

“Taking a nap requires a wake-up time, so let’s see how far and when we can get there. You need to be able to assume control in a certain time and take back the driving responsibility.”

Volvo will test the feature in California, which is a “good geographic location in terms of weather conditions: it’s sunny, it’s got good road conditions.”

Volvo’s recently announced Concept Recharge electric vehicle will be the first to be equipped with Ride Pilot.
