Uniden is giving the classic kids’ walkie-talkie a modern twist with a new product launch that lets children communicate using live two-way video, but without Wi-Fi, a mobile network or an app.

The Uniden KVWT01 Adventure Series Video Walkie-Talkie combines real-time video with voice communication, giving kids a fun but simple alternative to traditional audio-only walkie-talkies.

The two-unit system is perfect for use at home or outdoors, with a claimed range of up to 400 metres in open space. Uniden says the walkie-talkies don’t need an account setup, downloads or connectivity and are ready to go straight out of the box. 

Communication is controlled through a one-button push-to-talk function, while a built-in rechargeable battery and USB-C charging help keep the devices going for long bouts of play time. 

The video function has four screen viewing modes. Kids will enjoy switching between self-view, remote view and picture-in-picture displays. There are also three voice effects allowing for endless fun and mischief. 

Uniden is positioning the KVWT01 for backyard play, camping trips and family holidays.

The company says the standalone design is intentionally designed to give kids the immediacy of a video call without the need to use a smartphone or connect to the internet.

“Walkie-Talkies have always been a simple way for kids to explore, play and stay connected, and our new Kids Video Walkie Talkie brings that familiar experience into a more interactive format,” said Brad Hales, Head of Marketing, Oceania at Uniden.

“By adding live video without relying on Wi-Fi, a mobile network or an app, we’ve created a product that gives kids more ways to play while keeping the experience incredibly simple for parents.”

The KVWT01 is supplied as a two-unit set, with two USB-C charging cables and two lanyards included.

The Uniden Adventure Series Video Walkie-Talkie is available now in Australia for $69.
