TikTok is the latest tech platform to add a chatbot to its suite of offerings.

Currently being tested in the Philippines, ‘Tako’ is a ghost-shaped avatar that can answer any in-app questions with a human-like response, recommend videos to watch based on the query, and highlight content creators that you may like, based on your viewing history.

Expect Tako to be launched in other territories soon. TikTok recently filed a trademark for the technology in the US, describing Tako as a “computer software for facilitating interaction and communication between humans and AI”.

The filing also notes that Tako “could be used for the artificial production of human speech and text”, suggesting the chatbot application is only the beginning of Tako’s usefulness within TikTok.
