Struggling LG Display Courts Apple Amid Mounting OLED Competition
LG Display, battling years of financial losses, is pushing hard to win more business from Apple after the iPad maker adopted its Tandem OLED technology in the latest iPad Pro.
The company faces mounting pressure in its OLED TV division, with rival brands preparing to showcase new RGB LED displays at IFA 2025. Market analysts suggest the technology delivers OLED-like performance at a lower cost, posing a major threat to LG’s dominance in premium TVs.
According to industry reports, LG is lobbying Apple to use Tandem OLED panels in future iPhones, potentially as soon as the 2028 lineup. At present, Samsung Display holds the lion’s share of Apple’s OLED supply and is expected to strengthen its position further after the U.S. government cracked down on Chinese competitor BOE.
Tandem OLEDs stack two OLED layers, improving brightness, extending panel lifespan, and boosting power efficiency—key advantages Apple is said to be evaluating. However, Apple is also exploring RGB LED technology for future devices, which could complicate LG’s ambitions.
Financially, LG Display remains under pressure. The company posted full-year losses in both 2023 and 2024, and while Q4 2024 delivered an operating profit, it was offset by a significant net loss. In response, LG sold off its LCD factory in China to sharpen its focus on OLED, which helped it return to profitability in 2025.
Even so, profitability remains fragile. Competition from Samsung and emerging display technologies continues to weigh on the business. LG is promoting a newly developed 14-inch Tandem OLED panel aimed at laptops, though reports suggest Samsung may exclusively supply OLED screens for Apple’s 2026 MacBook Pro.
Despite glimpses of recovery, LG Display’s future hinges on whether it can secure fresh Apple contracts and fend off the growing threat of cheaper, next-generation display technologies.
