Sony’s PlayStation A Big Earner

Sony has reported that its PlayStation business was a big earner in the Japanese financial year ended March 31, with an operating profit of 177.5 billion yen (A$2.11 billion).

Revenue was up 17.8 percent year-on-year, thanks to an increasing number of PlayStation Plus subscribers and digital game sales.

Sony said it had sold 19 million PS4 consoles the year to March, and is on track to sell 20 million in the current financial year.

Its Xperia mobile phone line continues to languish in the doldrums, with reported revenue of 723.7 billion yen for the year, down from 759.1 billion yen.

There was better news in Sony’s home entertainment and sound division, which earned a profit of 85.8 billion yen, up from 58.5 billion yen.

Overall, the year’s revenue came in at 8544 billion yen with an operating income of 734.9 billion yen.
