The crease on the display of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series has always been controversial, and even though it’s less pronounced on the Fold 4, it’s still there. But it seems it will become a thing of the past with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5.
News filtering out of Korea says Samsung will be utilising a new waterdrop-shaped hinge in the future, allowing the display on the device to fold totally flat without gaps. Besides leaving little to no crease, it means the inner display should prove more durable.
The crease on Samsung’s foldables comes because of the hinge design, which creates a tight bend in the middle, resulting in a visible stream on the display.
The reports surfacing say the new waterdrop-shaped hinge – called a “dumbbell” inhouse – will increase durability of the display while making the device itself easier to carry.
Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Oppo have already ditched the crease from the display of their foldables, with Oppo’s recent Find X2 series (above) featuring a sleeker display without the crease.
Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 2 is the same, with what has been hailed as the best display in the industry, as it’s thinner than other folding smartphones around.
