Samsung Gear VR Tops Virtual Reality Charts

Samsung’s Gear VR was the most popular virtual reality headset worldwide in the first quarter of 2017, selling over twice as many units as its nearest competitor.

The Gear VR’s position as an affordable add-on to Samsung Galaxy smartphones helped it achieved sales of 782,000 units in Q1 2017 according to data from SuperData (via VentureBeat). The latest version of the Gear VR currently retails for $159.

Sony’s $550 PlayStation VR headset for the PlayStation 4 sold 375,000 units during Q1, while Google’s $119 Daydream headset, which is compatible with the Pixel and a handful of other smartphones, sold 170,000 units.

HTC remains ahead of Facebook-owned Oculus in the battle between virtual reality systems for PCs. The $1399 HTC Vive sold 95,000 units, while the Oculus Rift, which now sells for under $900 after the company began offering free international shipping, sold 64,000 units.
